This variability, and the fact that LEGO elements are very high quality gives them tremendous long-term value. If you have just a medium-ish LEGO collection you can reuse the parts again and again without having to buy more and more sets. They can all interconnect in a variety of ways and be part of the full system. All pieces are used over and over in many different sets for many years, even decades. There are no junk-pieces in LEGO that can only be used for one thing. The same piece can be a brick in a castle-wall, or part of an engine. And not to speak of the larger sets! The advantage though is that LEGO elements are fully compatible and you can re-use them in an unlimited variety of ways. Their mid-priced sets are in the $30-$50 range, which is not pocket-change. (Mega Bloks accessories are compatible with LEGO minifigures as even though LEGO and Mega Bloks figures are quite different, their size is about the same and they both have claw-like hands.) They are popular with LEGO customizers who are looking for accuracy and detail. They even come with printed highlights to make them as accurate as possible. In general, Mega Bloks accessories are much more detailed and only serve one purpose. (For example a minifigure-size dinner-plate can serve as a decoration on a building, or a minifigure tool can become part of an engine.)Īs far as Mega Bloks, I only own their HALO line of products, so I can mainly compare guns and backpacks, not everyday tools and other weaponry. ![]() The details on the accessories tend to be general in nature, so the same design can fit into many different themes, and even serve different purposes. LEGO has been releasing a wide range of accessories for minifigures tools, weapons, body-armor, backpacks, and more. In Mega Bloks sets the figures come fully assembled, whereas in their collectible packets they come in parts and you need to assemble them. In fact, trying to pop together the mini ball-joints proves to be quite a challenge and many times impossible. Most of them have unique moulds – which means they are not as interchangeable and customizable as LEGO minifigs. They have articulated joints for a much wider range of posing. Mega Bloks figures are very different from LEGO’s little guys. In recent years there has been a lot of focus on minifigures due to demand by LEGO fans and collectors, which resulted in a greater variety of facial expressions, better quality and more detailed printing, and even a series of collectible minifigures. They also fit within the LEGO system with multiple attachment points. LEGO minifigures are all made up of the same, fully compatible body-parts, so you can mix and match them any way you like. Of course we are all familiar with LEGO minifigures they are cute and chubby with a yellow skin (except for the licenses minifigs). Mega Bloks post, I will compare the two brands in various categories so you might gain a better understanding of the similarities and differences. In addition I’m one of those people who are not afraid to mix the two brands for an extended building experience. I own both LEGO and Mega Bloks sets and have fairly extensive experience with both. Some of you may comment “LEGO is best and all other brands are evil rip-offs that should be burned!” – but hear me through before throwing stones bricks at me, and perhaps you will gain a different perspective. Mega Bloks have the rights for making Thomas the Tank Engine, Hello Kitty, Need for Speed, Halo, World of Warcraft, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Skylanders Giants, and Call of Duty sets. ![]() However Mega Blocks also has a niche for themselves by owning some unique licenses – something that LEGO fans may find interesting and venture to explore. They use the same studs-and-tubes design as LEGO, package their sets similarly, and their sole purpose seems to be to trick parents and kids into buying a Mega Blocks set instead of a LEGO one. Mega Bloks is a Canadian company, that is basically looked at as a LEGO rip-off and copycat by LEGO fans, with lower quality products and cheaper prices. Today I would like to address a subject that often comes up in comments but we haven’t fully explored in an article as of yet.

As Jack Lawrence, who played as Watson’s second guitarist for 27 years, observes “Doc really hated being called a bluegrass act-he did so many other things, from pop standards to rockabilly.” The 15 songs and tunes on the album illustrate the depth of Watson’s influence on American music. I Am a Pilgrim: Doc Watson at 100 brings together a diverse group of guitarists-from slide guitarist Ariel Posen and bluesman Corey Harris to jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and lap tapping guitarist Yasmin Williams-playing styles from across the musical landscape. What more fitting tribute to Watson and his legacy than to release a tribute album on this Friday, April 28, at MerleFest, which Watson founded in 1988 to honor his son, Merle, who died in a car accident in 1985. His smooth, crisp, and clear finger-picking style influenced generations of flatpickers from Clarence White down to Billy Strings. ![]() The performer is survived by Rosa Lee Carlton Watson, his wife of nearly sixty-six years, their daughter Nancy Ellen, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his brother David Watson.Doc Watson, “one of the treasures of American music” says Mighty Poplar and Punch Brothers guitarist Chris Eldridge, would have turned 100 this year, on March 3, 2023. The pair shared the Grammy for their album "Legacy."įormer US president Bill Clinton said, when awarding him the National Medal of Arts: "There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson." So began his busy professional career including concerts, clubs, colleges and festivals such as the Newport Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall.Īs recently as 2002, Watson - who recorded dozens of albums - took home one of his eight Grammys, when he joined forces with banjo player David Holt. It was 1962 when Watson gave his first solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in New York's Greenwich Village. That led to his first recordings, "Old-Time Music at Clarence Ashley's." In 1960 folklorists Ralph Rinzler and Eugene Earle heard Watson in the process. His opening in the musical world was aided by the growing folk revival. "Doc was fierce, but not fierce in a bad way - just fierce in a determined way," Holt said. Musician David Holt, who played with Watson for years, told National Public Radio that the special determination of a blind, self-made man was clear to hear in his work. Illness left Watson blind as an infant yet he was able to channel his talent and determination into musical renown he was widely known as one of the world's most accomplished flat-pickers. ![]() His father was delighted that he learned the chords in a day, and helped Watson buy his own guitar just days later. 'Might help you get through the world.'"Īccording to family lore, at 13, he taught himself the chords to "When the Roses Bloom in Dixieland" on a borrowed guitar. One of these days we'll get you a better one,' he said. "He brought it to me and put it in my hands, and said, 'Son, I want you to learn to play this thing real well. Watson told the US public radio show Fresh Air that he was just 11 when his father made him a banjo - with the skin of a dead cat. Watson, a National Medal of Arts winner who hailed from Deep Gap, North Carolina, passed away following abdominal surgery last week at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, promoters Folklore productions announced.įrom a musical family, Watson grew up poor in the Blue Ridge, and picked up the banjo early - his first instrument - before moving on to the guitar. Grammy-winning US folk legend Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson, who branched out from his Appalachian musical roots blending in bluegrass, country, gospel and blues, died in North Carolina Tuesday, his promoters said. ![]() A “catalyst” is a substance that causes a chemical reaction but is not changed or consumed during that reaction, while a “converter” is a person or thing that converts something. What do catalytic converters do?Ī catalytic converter changes dangerous and polluting exhaust gases into less dangerous forms. They aren’t kidding about the “precious” name, either, as just two ounces of rhodium are worth more than the MSRP of some new cars. Inside the catalytic converter are a number of precious metals, such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. An older vehicle might have only one catalytic converter located after the manifold but well before the resonator, muffler and exhaust tips. In modern vehicles, the first catalytic converter might be integrated into the exhaust manifold, followed by another cat later on. If you were to pull your modern vehicle onto a mechanic’s lift and look up, you’d see the bottom of your vehicle and most likely the entire exhaust system.įrom the engine, you would find the exhaust manifold carrying hot spent exhaust gases away from the engine. What does a catalytic converter do, exactly, and what happens when yours fails? What is a catalytic converter?Ī catalytic converter (or cat, for short) is an emissions device that looks like a small muffler connected to the exhaust system. The solution was the catalytic converter. It looked gross and smelled worse, but the smog generated by cars was also dangerous to breathe.
